Steak & Broccoli Stir Fry

This Chinese take-out favorite can be made easily at home with all of the flavors you love—but without all the salt and sugar that you don't!

This steak and broccoli stir fry recipe is basically another version of beef with broccoli—you know, the super popular Chinese takeout dish. This is a fun, simple ingredient recipe you'll love for lunch or dinner meal prepping and it's suitable for paleo and gluten-free diets.

Steak & Broccoli Stir Fry Ingredients

  • 1 (12-ounce) bag of frozen broccoli (or approximately 3 cups fresh)
  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms
  • ½ yellow onion
  • 8 garlic cloves
  • 1 pound flank or skirt steak, sliced
  • Generous ½ cup Primal Kitchen Island Teriyaki sauce

How to Make Steak and Broccoli Stir Fry

n about half an hour, you can have this dinner prepped or on the table. Cook the garlic and onions together. Then add the mushrooms, but keep an eye on them as they will cook fairly quickly. Next, you'll add the beef and the teriyaki sauce, and finally, the broccoli. The beef cooks in less than ten minutes, and if you've sliced it thinly? Then it'll cook faster still.

How to Serve Steak and Broccoli

Of course, this is great with rice but if you're going paleo or keto, you'll likely skip regular rice and opt for cauliflower rice instead. If it's good for paleo and keto diets, then you know it's gluten-free, too! (If you need something similar but lower in sugars, try this Low Carb Beef & Broccoli Stir Fry Meal Prep). Rice noodles or buckwheat noodles would work in this dish too if you aren't following a low-carb (or no-carb) diet.

This meal prep is also great all on its own.

How to Store Steak and Broccoli Stir Fry

As a meal prep, it will keep in a sealed container in the fridge for 4 to 5 days. Reheat in a skillet over medium heat and stir it so it doesn't stick. Refresh with a little more water and/or sauce, if need be.

You can also freeze these leftovers for up to 3 months. Defrost in the microwave or the fridge overnight. Another option? Take the whole frozen block and pop it right into a hot skillet with a little bit of water, and stir until it's completely thawed and hot all the way through again.

Substitutions and Alterations

This dish works best with skirt or flank steak, and the more thinly it's sliced, the faster it will cook. But you can use any cut of steak that you have on hand but again, slice it thinly so it cooks quickly.

Use either fresh or frozen broccoli; fresh will take a bit longer to cook because you'll need to steam it. However, it will stay crispier than frozen broccoli that you toss into a hot pan.

The recipe is ideal for those who are following a paleo diet, and the sauce we've included is from our friends at Primal Kitchen. It's a no-soy Island Teriyaki that you'll love to use on this dish (and on chicken and shrimp, too!). This great shortcut contains coconut aminos, balsamic vinegar, pineapple juice concentrate (hence, the tropical/island vibe!), date paste, ginger, garlic, turmeric, tamarind, sesame oil, and more.

Cauliflower works instead of broccoli if need be, or mix them up.

We also wouldn't object to grating some fresh ginger into the pan with the garlic and onions. I mean, right? It cooks quickly and adds a bit of sweet heat here.
